3 Poems by Florence M. Cohen

Cousin Florence Geismar wrote these three poems in the back flyleaves of the book “A House of Pomegranates” by Oscar Wilde. She signed the poems Florence M. Cohen, her maiden name.

               Purple Grapes
A cluster of dusky purple grapes,
Mellowing in the frosty yellow
of autumn sunshine,
Is shyly hiding, behind that
broad bottle green leaf;
Each little glowing ball, bursting
with a strange potent wine,
A wine tempered with a sweet
and silvery coolness.
               Light - Glass
The slanting bars of light,
Are imprisoned in the clear glass,
And splintered into chequered fragments
of bright colors.
         "Serenades" (City Cats)
At night when the alleys of the city
are black pools,
When the street lamps glimmer
warmly,
Treading softly,
In velvet slippers,
Eye balls luminous in the darkness,
Bodies darting in the shadows,
Come the troubadours of the city,
Singing their mournful songs.
